Plenty Of Wins On The Horizon
Kiwi import Atomic Horizon provided his new owners with a quick return on their investment with a dogged first up win at Cranbourne on Thursday night.
The son of Bettors Delight was only recently sourced by trainer Michael Hughes for the Curran Family Racing Group and had only been in Australia for a matter of weeks before his Cranbourne success.
As Hughes explained after the race, he had been impressed with a number of the gelding’s recent NZ runs including a last start second at Kumeu on 7 October. “I have gradually been getting to know the horse since he arrived but his work on the Saturday morning leading into the race was super and we were very confident he would acquit himself well first up.”
Driver Jodi Quinlan sent Atomic Horizon to the lead shortly after the mobile barrier drew away from the field. With a lap to travel however, those punters who had taken the short odds on offer about the horse would have been concerned that he appeared to be under some pressure.
“I only realised after the race that he hadn’t lead in a race before.” Hughes offered. “He is obviously inclined to be a bit lazy in front and Jodi had to keep his mind on the job for much of the race. I liked the way he found the line though and think we can have some real fun with him.” Hughes said.
The Curran family has also enjoyed recent success with Hourora Delight, another Kiwi import who Hughes purchased on the group’s behalf earlier this year.
Meanwhile the Cranbourne Club is busy preparing for its Cranbourne Pacing Cup meeting on Saturday night 10th December. As CEO David Scott noted “We believe that Im Themightquinnn will be returning to defend his crown and given the Group 1 status of the race, I’m sure we’ll end up with a super field of challengers.”
Group hospitality packages are still available and can be booked by calling the club on 5996 8677.
